Our role
Engineer your site, schema, and citation footprint so Google AI Overviews surfaces you when buyers ask the questions that should lead to you.

01 · What we do

What we do for Google AI Overviews

AI Overviews is the single highest-traffic AI surface in the world. We get your business named inside the Overview itself — the synthesized answer at the top of the page — and into the carousel of cited sources beneath. That's a two-part job: rank for the underlying query, and structure your page so Google's generator quotes you cleanly.

02 · Why it matters

Why showing up here is non-negotiable

AI Overviews appears on roughly half of US Google searches and that share is climbing fast. When it appears, organic click-through on the blue-link results below drops by 30 to 60 percent. The Overview itself becomes the answer most users act on. If you're not in it, you've effectively lost the SERP — even if you still rank #1 organically. Being cited in the Overview is the new #1 position.

03 · What's different

Why Google AI Overviews is different from the others

AI Overviews is generative on top of Google's existing ranking. The underlying retrieval is mostly the same as classic Search — same crawl, same authority signals, same E-E-A-T weighting — but the synthesis layer adds a filter for direct-answer formatting. Pages that rank well organically don't automatically get cited; the page also has to give Google's generator a clean quotable chunk. That's where most SEO-heavy strategies miss.

04 · How it works under the hood

The mechanics of Google AI Overviews

If you want to win Google AI Overviews you need to know how it actually picks what to say. Here's the short version of what's happening every time a user types a prompt.

  1. 01

    Triggering

AI Overviews appears when Google's classifier predicts the query benefits from synthesis (definitional, comparative, how-to, or local). Pure navigational queries don't get one. Tracking which of your category's queries trigger Overviews is the first step.

  2. 02

    Source selection

The Overview pulls from 3 to 8 sources that already rank in the top 10 to 20 organic results for the query. Being on page one is essentially a prerequisite. Beyond that, Google's generator favors pages with answer-shaped chunks: a direct sentence near the top, then supporting context.

  3. 03

    Synthesis style

Google rewrites and combines content from the chosen sources. Your sentence rarely appears verbatim. Instead, the generator paraphrases your structure. Brands named explicitly in your text are more likely to be named in the Overview.

  4. 04

    Citation cards

Cited sources appear as cards beneath the Overview. The top three cards get the bulk of click-through. Card order tracks generator confidence, not organic rank.

  5. 05

    Refresh cadence

Overviews re-generate as the underlying organic ranking shifts. Major content updates often reflect within days. Google's safety filters can suppress an Overview entirely for sensitive queries.

05 · The playbook

What we actually optimize for Google AI Overviews

No silver bullets. These are the levers that move the needle in Google AI Overviews specifically, ranked by what tends to matter most for our clients.

  • Direct-answer paragraphs in the first 100 words of each page
  • Structured H2s framed as the question users actually search
  • FAQ schema, HowTo schema, and Article schema with author + date
  • Explicit brand naming in the first sentence of each section (Google paraphrases but keeps proper nouns)
  • Topical authority — Overviews favor sites that own a category, not generalists
